SUMMARY:Deadline to Comment to FS on Uranium Exploration near Craven Canyon
DESCRIPTION:A Canadian company has applied for a second time to explore for radioactive uranium at Craven Canyon in the southern Black Hills. This project\, called the October Jinx Project\, is on federal land. It is part of the larger Chord Project. The company is named Clean Nuclear Energy Corporation (CNEC)\, which is a subsidiary of Nexus Uranium. (Note that nothing about nuclear energy is “clean\,” including uranium drilling and mining.) \nWhat’s so special about Craven Canyon? Craven Canyon is a world-class cultural and historic site. It contains rock art and other artifacts that are more than 7\,000 years old. Many artifacts and sites of interest have been found in and around the Canyon\, where people gather for ceremony and study. The October Jinx project would involve 17 drill pads with drilling depths reaching 700 feet. Each drill site would use 5\,000 to 10\,000 gallons of water per day. \nThe U.S. Forest Service (FS)  has requested public comments on this proposed project\, with a due date of March 3\, 2026\, 11:59 pm (MT). FS has a narrated slideshow about the project is available here: https://usfs.app.box.com/v/PinyonPublic/file/2116985517019 (a transcription of this presentation is also available under the October Jinx “Project Documents” tab)..Here is the FS’s project web page– to read notice and other information about the project\, such as view a map – https://www.fs.usda.gov/r02/blackhills/projects/67625.  \nHOW ANYONE CAN SUBMIT A PUBLIC COMMENT \nWhat are some potential impacts of the October Jinx Project? \nIn addition to the importance of Craven Canyon\, there are many things you can comment on. BH Clean Water Alliance  has provided a list of items to get you started (but use your own words and pick the topics that are important to you). To read more about the proposed project and how to comment\, go to BHCWA  website at: \nhttps://bhcleanwateralliance.org/october-jinx-project/ \nTo comment on this proposed project\, go to *Comment here*: \nhttps://cara.fs2c.usda.gov/Public/CommentInput?Project=67625 \nOther reference \nDRA info page: https://www.dakotarural.org/our-work/uranium-mining/ \nNDN Collective info page: https://ndncollective.org/protect-the-he-sapa/
