SUMMARY:Meade County Commission Proposed Shooting Range Elk Vale Road
DESCRIPTION:John Kanta at SDGFP knows about the shooting range.  Engineering plans have been drawn up.\n\nAs federal funds are sought\, a NEPA analysis may be done. Nancy Hilding can e-mail you a PDF of thedrawings of Rapid City Firearms Range Complex\nSDGFP Commission’s Resolution about land purchase can be found at link (The range will be in Meade not Pennington County): https://gfp.sd.gov/UserDocs/meetings/21-03_Resolution_-_Authorizing_purchase_of_Rapid_City_Shooting_Range_(3).pdf\n \n Some environmental issues associated with shooting ranges can be – noise from gun fire with hundreds of shooting positions\, traffic increases on dirt roads\, fire risk\, lead contamination from bullets and impacts to ponds/creeks/ground water in nearby area.  There are several ponds or impoundments on or near edges of the property.  The range’s south boundary bisects a pond on an unnamed tributary of Elk Creek. The range is divided between Elk and Antelope Creek drainage basins\, likely with at least some of the northeast-end of range would be draining to Antelope Creek and the south-end will be draining to Elk Creek.   \n \n In the pink map below\, the range’s south boundary crosses the heart shaped pond just east of Elk Vale Rd\, that sits on a tributary that flows southeast to Elk Creek – merging with the Creek in several miles. It’s north boundary is near the slight bend in Elk Vale Rd at a mile and a quarter above that pond.  It is a half mile wide and a mile and a quarter tall.\n \nMap – as JPG file below\n \n\n\n \n \n\n \nEach of the smaller shooting bays may have 5 -10 shooting lanes/each. There are 29  such bays. The 200-400 ft bays may have 20 shooting position/each. The extra long bays may have 40 positions.\, The shooting clays have 12 positions/each.  Decibels from each gun fire are significant 150dB-163.2 dB and this  range could have more than 300 shooting positions; https://earinc.com/gunfire-noise-level-reference-chart/.\n \nConcerns about lead pollution:\n\nFact sheet on Lead Pollution at Outdoor Firing Ranges:\nhttps://static.ewg.org/reports/2001/LeadPollutionAtOutdoorFiringRanges.pdf\n \n\nEPA on BMP on managing lead at shooting ranges\nhttps://www.epa.gov/sites/default/files/documents/epa_bmp.pdf\n \nDrawing of the master plan for the site – as JPG file below\n\n\n

SUMMARY:BHNF Moonwalk on Beavers at Jenny Gulch
DESCRIPTION:The Black Hills National Forest will hold its second Moon Walk program of the year on Saturday\, July 24 at 7:00 p.m. This will be a ½ mile educational round-trip hike. Because of limited parking\, visitors are encouraged to carpool. \nFeatured speakers Corissa Busse and Lori Brown\, of The Nature Conservancy\, will discuss the role beavers play in our ecosystem. “Beavers are nature’s ecosystem engineers!” said Busse. “They help restore and protect our landscape from drought\, wildfire\, and more – and create some of the most lush\, diverse\, culturally significant and wildlife friendly areas of the forest and prairies. But in many areas\, beavers have been removed from our streams for centuries and need our help to recover.” Participants will learn about the power and future potential of stream restoration in the Black Hills area\, the effects of this work across western South Dakota\, and the role of beavers in this effort. \nTo reach the Moon Walk from Rapid City\, drive west on SD-Hwy 44 for 14 miles to US-Hwy 385. Turn right (north)\, toward Deadwood. Continue north for 1.4 miles\, then turn left onto Silver City Road. Travel 2.1 miles to Jenney Gulch Road and turn right onto FSR 261. Travel approximately 1.4 miles to the Moon Walk site. Signs will be posted at major intersections to help locate the parking area. Wildlife and raptors are commonly seen along this route so give yourself enough time to enjoy the forest. \nVisitors are encouraged to bring flashlights\, water\, and bug repellant\, and dress for cooler evening temperatures. Long pants and sturdy footwear (hiking boots or athletic shoes) are recommended for comfort and safety while hiking on uneven terrain. \nMeetings may be cancelled due to weather or other adverse situations such as high fire danger.
