SUMMARY:Deadline to Comment to FS on Uranium Exploration near Craven Canyon
DESCRIPTION:A Canadian company has applied for a second time to explore for radioactive uranium at Craven Canyon in the southern Black Hills. This project\, called the October Jinx Project\, is on federal land. It is part of the larger Chord Project. The company is named Clean Nuclear Energy Corporation (CNEC)\, which is a subsidiary of Nexus Uranium. (Note that nothing about nuclear energy is “clean\,” including uranium drilling and mining.) \nWhat’s so special about Craven Canyon? Craven Canyon is a world-class cultural and historic site. It contains rock art and other artifacts that are more than 7\,000 years old. Many artifacts and sites of interest have been found in and around the Canyon\, where people gather for ceremony and study. The October Jinx project would involve 17 drill pads with drilling depths reaching 700 feet. Each drill site would use 5\,000 to 10\,000 gallons of water per day. \nThe U.S. Forest Service (FS)  has requested public comments on this proposed project\, with a due date of March 3\, 2026\, 11:59 pm (MT). DESCRIPTION:SDGFP Commission March 5-6\, 2026 in Pierre and Zoom -here is the  agenda – https://gfp.sd.gov/UserDocs/nav/Commission_Agenda_-_March_5-6_Public.pdf\n\nIt has the Zoom links for attending the hybrid meeting.\nAgendas can change up to 24 hours before meetings\, I think\, unless the statute about that  has changed.  You can testify (remotely or in person) at about 2 pm CT (1 pm MT) during  the open forum.  Zoom testifying instructions are in the agenda (see link above).\n        The SD Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee killed a bill (SB 148) during session\, that would have stopped the Nest Predator Bounty Program\, but said it would send a letter to the Commission asking for changes to it. AS of about 1:13 pm SDGFP had not received a letter from Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources about the Nest Predator Bounty Program\, asking for the Commission to 1) cut annual funds down to quarter of a million/year\, 2)  limit bounty  eligibility to minors and 3) enforce a  $250 limit per each minor/season  (neither has Nancy Hilding received it &  she  has written/called/messaged and asked for a copy once written.)\n       The Nest Predator Bounty Program  is up as an information item (not an Action Item)\, however we still ask that folks go to the Public Comment portal and \npost at least one sentence in opposition to the NPBP or if you wrote a letter to the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee just refashion it for Commission. PHAS wants them to see opposition to it —  maybe some of them will start thinking about the harm of the NPBP.\nIf people testify on the NPBP\, we may get newspaper coverage. You get three minutes during open forum. DESCRIPTION:Black Hills Area Botany & Ecology Conference – March 13. more details coming in March \nWe don’t know time of day\, but guessed at 8 to 5.  There sometimes is a post event social hour at a different location. \nThe 2026 Black Hills Area Botany and Ecology Workshop (BHABEW) is coming up on Friday\, March 13\, so it is time to register. \nRegistration: The workshop will take place on-site at The Outdoor Campus – West\, 4130 Adventure Trail\, Rapid City\, SD\, and parts of it will be online via Zoom. Although there is no registration fee\, sponsors ask that all attendees (especially off-site speakers!!!!) pre-register\, whether you will attend on-site or online. This is especially important because you’ll also be asked if you’ll attend a chili feed lunch at the workshop site. DESCRIPTION:“God Squad” meeting to consider exemption from ESA for fossil fuel projects in Caribbean – Comment Deadline \n           “As part of President Trump’s push to hand more favors to the oil and gas industry\, the administration is preparing to convene the so-called “God Squad”\, a rarely-convened group with the power to remove Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections for the sake of economic interests. On March 31 at 9am EST\, U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) Secretary Doug Burgum will convene the group to discuss providing these exemptions for offshore oil and gas activities in the Gulf of Mexico. \n           The stakes are enormous. The Gulf is home to over two dozen threatened or endangered species\, including the Kemp’s ridley turtle and the Rice’s whale\, which NOAA describes as “one of the rarest whales in the world.” Scientists estimate only 51 Rice’s whales remain\, with oil and gas operations and spills being a major threat. Granting a blanket ESA exemption for offshore oil and gas operations in the Gulf would sentence critically endangered species like the Rice’s whale to extinction\, while subjecting others to major harm from vessel strikes\, seismic blasting\, oil spills\, and other industry operations. \n          Broad ESA exemptions for the fossil fuel industry in the Gulf would also weaken or eliminate the use of basic environmental safeguards\, including spill prevention\, well-control rules\, and voluntary vessel speed guidance that helps prevent lethal collisions with marine life.
