If you would like to join, support or volunteer for an organization making a local difference come join us. Give us a call, email us, or come visit us.
Prairie Hills Audubon Society is operated by volunteers; we have no paid staff. All persons interested in conservation of our region are encouraged to become members of the Prairie Hills Audubon Society. Regular dues are $20/year and low income dues are $10/year. Gift memberships are $10. If you join the National Audubon Society and live in our assigned territory you also become a member.

You can also join Prairie Hills Audubon Society (PHAS) by joining the National Audubon Society (NAS) — if your post office address is within our assigned jurisdiction. Our Jurisdiction is all of the Black Hills and about an hours drive around the Black Hills and the section of SD south of I-90 from the Black Hills up to the eastern boundary of Todd and Mellette Counties. This is so that Oglala and Rosebud Sioux Tribe lands are in our jurisdiction. Prairie Hills Audubon Society chapter code with the NAS is V02 (0 = a zero). If you have never joined the NAS before, we will get the full, first year $20 membership fee. If you joined NAS in the past, we get no share of your dues money. We get a yearly grant of $565 from the NAS – which we get as long as we are a chapter, irrespective of how many joint members we serve. We suggest folks who join us via NAS occasionally send us a small donation to help pay for our operation costs.

If you are a former member of Missouri Breaks Audubon Society (MBAS), if you contact a PHAS Board member we will arrange for you to get an “honorary” membership with PHAS. MBAS was our sister Chapter in SD, located in Pierre. It folded in spring/summer of 2023 and gave us a donation, so we created a policy of giving former MBAS members gift memberships.
We currently need people to join the membership committee to help with some or all of these tasks:
- Sending welcome letters, cards or calls to new members
- Maintaining a spreadsheet of Chapter only Members
- Researching incomplete contact information provided by members on applications or by NAS.
- Upon return to face-to-face meetings, helping with welcoming & greeting members/friends
- Handing out sign up sheets at meetings & storing them
