Endangered Species Day Celebration

Endangered Species Day is a celebration of our nation’s wildlife & wild places. Started in 2006 by the US Congress, Endangered Species Day (ESD) is the third Friday of May. We have celebrated ESD in Rapid City with a multi-group sponsored event for 18 years.
6:00-6:15 pm – Introduction by Sponsors
6:15 pm – 7:05 pm – Speaker: Dr. Ray Moranz, Pollinator Conservation Specialist for the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. – Ray will speak on – “The Biology and Conservation of Two Awesome (but Very Different!) South Dakota Butterflies: the Monarch and the Regal Fritillary”
Dr. Moranz will enliven his presentation with many high-quality photos showing the most intriguing aspects of the biology of these large, beautiful butterflies. Then he will provide useful tips for how you can help these species in South Dakota.
7:05 pm – 7:55 pm – Speaker: Jessica Speiser, Wildlife Diversity Biologist, SD Game, Fish and Parks – Jessica will speak on American dipper and osprey and also give some updates on GFP’s non-game program.
The American dipper and the osprey are listed as threatened under SD’s state Endangered Species Act
5 minute break
8:00 pm- 8:50 pm – Speakers: Kristal Stoner – Vice President National Audubon Society and Executive Director Audubon Great Plains, She will speak on “Challenges and Action Opportunities for Endangered Species Conservation in Federal Policy”
The Endangered Species Act is over 50 years old, but the broad scope of this legislation that prioritizes animals and plants creates conflict with economic interests. Once again, ESA needs support from the conservation community. Learn more about what you can do to support policies that support endangered species conservation.
Co sponsors –
Prairie Hills Audubon Society, the Norbeck Society, Rapid City Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America, Western Watersheds Project & Black Hills Chapter of Citizen’s Climate Lobby, Tanka Fund, are confirmed as co-sponsors, we will be adding others as it gets closer to the date.
