Field Trip on Forestry Basics with Dave Mertz in Black Hills
October 18 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Friday, October 18, 9:00 a.m. – noon
Forestry Basics Field Trip – back by popular demand!
with retired BHNF Natural Resource Staff Officer, Dave Mertz
Join us for a field trip to learn about Forestry and see examples of prescribed burning, thinning, and overstory removal. This is great opportunity to understand terminology and concepts that guide forest management. These will be illustrated with real life examples on the Black Hills National Forest. Dave retired from the Black Hills National Forest in 2017 as the forest’s natural resource staff officer. Over the course of his career, he was a forester, silviculturist, forest fire management officer and a fire staff officer.
Meet at 9:00 at the Mickelson Trailhead in Hill City. We will caravan/carpool from there with about 4 or 5 stops along the way.
Bring water and snacks. If you know you are coming in advance, if you send an e-mail to phas.wsd@rapidnet.com, it will help us to plan, however you can come if you don’t send an e-mail.
This field trip is traditionally sponsored each October by Prairie Hills Audubon Society, the Norbeck Society and the Black Hills Group of the Sierra Club
