Field Trip on Forestry Basics
Monday, Oct 16th, 2023, 9 am
A car caravan will be organized in a dirt parking area along highway 385, just south of the entrance to Crazy Horse Monument & north of Custer, SD.
Dave Mertz, a retired forester from the Black Hills National Forest (BHNF), will drive around the forest with us. Dave is a former Natural Resource Staff Officer for BHNF – a major leadership position at the BHNF.
The purpose is to learn about forestry. We will make about 4-5 brief stops to see stands selected to highlight various forest management techniques, terminology & the management choices made by the BHNF. Attendees can ask a retired BHNF forester questions about timber management by the BHNF and discuss issues with group. Please bring water and snacks.
This event is co-sponsored by PHAS & the Norbeck Society. This will be the third year we have such a field trip in October.
We also refer folks to the Norbeck Society web page on timber issues, to learn about the issues – this web page explains issues in a simple, easy to understand way. The Black Hills National Forest is cutting trees at a rate that is not sustainable. This is a violation of law.
Here are some group letters to the Forest service, asking for changes in management that explain issues, in much greater detail and complexity
