Meade County Planning Commission meeting
Meade County Planning Commission meeting
Meade County offices, 1300 Sherman Street, Sturgis, SD
The meeting starts at 1 pm on Monday. The public comment period happens very close to the start of the meeting. We are not sure when the meet ends.
We have heard rumors that the – pending limestone mine already licensed by DANR, but not yet working/built , near south side of Piedmont — may be discussed by public during public comment – however anyone can show up and comment on it.

Various articles have been in Rapid City journal and Pioneer and SD NewsWatch.
Incorrect rumors have been stated/circulated that Counties can’t have ordinances about mines unless they have zoning. While this is true for hard rock mining in SD, it is not true for sand/gravel mines which are regulated under a different chapter of Title 45 whose laws don’t apply to sand/gravel chapter. Meade County could adopt sand/gravel mining ordinance.
For ordinance templates one can look at Pennington Counties Sand/Gravel Mining ordinance sub-set found in their zoning ordinance and Lawrence Counties Extractive Industries ordinance sub-set found in their zoning ordinance.
Lawrence County‘s Extractive Industry subset of Zoning Ordinancehttps://phas-wsd.org/wp-content/uploads/EXTRACT.INDUSTRYawrencecounty-sd-ZONING2025.pdf
SD’s statewide laws & regulations that govern sand/gravel mines are woefully inadequate and need to be changed with lobbying effort in Pierre.
